Reviews All prizes are criticized due to the different tastes of people. Of course, not everyone agrees with the winner each year in each of the categories. But being the most prominent film awards in the field and major U.S., in recent years have been the target of a number of criticisms. One of the main criticisms has been that many movies winning the best film award have failed to stand the test of time. For example, the film of Cecil B. DeMille The Greatest Show on Earth (1952) is one of those movies that despite having won the top prize, do not have the film weight is assumed. Moreover, some of the films considered cinematic masterpieces by critics, only managed to be nominated and failed to win the prize. The most obvious example is the 1941 film Citizen Kane, directed by Orson Welles, who, despite having eight nominations, only won the prize for best original screenplay, and is considered by both the critics and moviegoers, one of the masterpieces of cinema. This film, along with The Godfather is one of the tapes from the list of 100 best films according to AFI. It is important to add that the movie The Passion of the Christ produced and directed by Mel Gibson, rated as the best film of all time citation needed and by far the best production of the passion and death of Jesus, only three have received nominations and no statue. It questioned the impartiality of the Academy Awards because this is an independent, not the big production houses. Additionally, said that the alleged anti-Semitic character of the production would have caused discomfort in not a few of the members of the academy which gives the awards citation needed .Another criticism that the films that won in the category of best film, with few exceptions, dramas, romances, musicals, epic films or films about social and political issues. This will obviate genres like science fiction, westerns, animation and horror movies and comedy. For example, in the history of the academy, only a fantasy film has won the award for best film, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and very few Westerns have won the prize. Even John Ford, a master of Western, won four awards and none were for films of this genre. As for the actors and actresses, who is criticized for consideration by the academy have to excel in dramatic roles before even having featured in comedic roles. Only five players have won the award for best actor playing comedy roles. In recent years, the validity of the Academy Awards has been questioned. Many of the directors considered geniuses of cinema (Ingmar Bergman, David Lynch, Federico Fellini, Alfred Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, Akira Kurosawa, Ridley Scott, Stanley Kubrick, Charles Chaplin, Quentin Tarantino, Orson Welles …) have never won the award for best director. The same has happened in significant opportunities for actors and actresses in popularity and prestige: Richard Burton, Liam Neeson, Harrison Ford, Deborah Kerr, Barbara Stanwyck, Lauren Bacall, Cary Grant, Judy Garland, Greta Garbo, Eleanor Parker, among others, did not win the award despite deserving it at different times, or were ignored when the nominations. They have also been described as racist. Until 2001, only six black actors had won an Oscar: Hattie McDaniel in 1939, as supporting actress in Gone with the wind (Gone with the Wind), Sidney Poitier, best lead actor for Lilies of the Field (The lilies of the valley) in 1963, Louis Gossett, Jr.Actor An Officer and a Gentleman in 1982, Denzel Washington Times Actor for Glory in 1989, Whoopi Goldberg as supporting actress in Ghost in 1990, and Cuba Gooding Jr., actor for Jerry Maguire in 1996. Finally, in 2001 were awarded to African-American actor Denzel Washington for Training Day movie (Training Day) and actress HalleBerry color for Monster’s Ball. They have since been awarded several African American actors and actresses like Jamie Foxx, best actor for Ray in 2005), and Forest Whitaker best actor for The Last King of Scotland (The Last King of Scotland) and Jennifer Hudson as best supporting actress Dreamgirls in 2006 and Mo’Nique by Precious, in 2010.
